Travel To Ensenada
Brush up on your Spanish because Baja California is home to a couple of popular destinations that every American traveler needs to check out. Cabo San Lucas has been a mainstay of American vacationers for decades but recently is known for its paved-over beaches as the region has been transformed by luxury resorts.
Ensenada has gone under the radar for some time, despite it being just 45 minutes south of San Diego. However, Ensenada is a popular hub for Mexican travelers. The city is home to a prestigious University of Sciences and is the busiest port city on Mexico’s Pacific coast. For these reasons alone, the city is seeing a steep uptick in people moving to the city for more opportunity and prosperity.
The city also offers plenty for tourists. As one of the most popular cruise ship destinations, Ensenada has plenty to do for tourists both within the city itself and also the surrounding area and offers some really unique experiences for travelers.
Downtown Ensenada
Food
The city of Ensenada is small when compared to some of the bigger cities in mainland Mexico and is even smaller than Tijuana. But what Ensenada lacks in size is made up for by its wide array of activities, food, and drink, and all of it is easily accessible by biking.
As a port city, Ensenada has some amazing fresh seafood. The ceviche at Muelle 3 or Boules or the fish tacos you can find at just about any taco shop are all to die for. But recently, Italian cuisine has burst onto the scene, or rather a Mexican Italian fusion called Baja Med.
Chef Javier Plascencia has popularized the term Baja Med in San Diego as the climate in Baja California is similar to Southern Italy. Thus all of the same fruits and vegetables in Italy can be grown in Baja, more importantly, they taste nearly identical.
History museum
The city of Ensenada is home to several museums, like the museum of wine and vine, but it is known for its history museum. The Museo de Historia is built in the traditional Mexicali style, and inside you’ll find an interesting museum with several gardens and green spaces decorating the lavishly tiled space.
There is also a bar inside if learning isn’t really your thing.
Cultural center
The Riviera Cultural Center of Ensenada’s stated goal is to preserve the cultural, historical, and artistic history of the region. If you love checking out regional artists and exhibitions, this place is a must for you.
Drink
Ensenada is a beach town, so finding margaritas and other tropical drinks is easy. If your Spanish isn’t the best, there are also plenty of ex-pat-run bars to make you feel at home. Hussong’s Cantina is a legendary spot. This bar used to be home to literary giants, American and Mexican alike, but now it is a bit touristy. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out because Hussong’s Cantina is steeped in history. Go pour one out for your favorite author.
Ensenada is also home to one of the most popular Mexican wine-growing regions.
Valle de Guadalupe
Just north of the city centro is Valle de Guadalupe which is home to hundreds of wineries and vineyards. Valle de Guadalupe is Mexico’s most famous and most productive wine-growing region. It is also making a huge splash in the ‘natural wine’ movement that is gaining popularity in the USA.
They have a great wine route where you can go attend wine tastings and enjoy the pleasantly temperate evenings. It has the most similar climate to southern Italy in all of North America.
International Land Alliance is a real estate development company that owns a large development in Valle de Guadalupe called Valle Divino, that has wineries of its own. To find out more, please check it out here: Valle Divino.
The San Miguel Hidalgo Malecon
Malecon means pier, but Ensenada’s is smack dab in the city’s centro, and it is one of the most popular walking trails in the city or ‘calle Primera.’
Bahia de Todos Santos
The playa has some amazing things to see, too, after all, Ensenada is a beach town in Mexico. Bahia de Todos Santos, or All Saints Bay, is an amazing place to go grey whale watching. The bay serves as a temporary resting stop for the migrating gray whale, which occasionally gives birth offshore, though it is much more common for birthing to occur in the lagoons of the west coast of Baja California
Beach and ocean
The beach is obviously one of the main draws to the city. It is a great place to stop and relax and even go kayaking to visit la bufadora which is a blowhole that draws thousands of tourists a year. Surfing is also a huge activity as this part of the Pacific coast gets great waves for surfers
La bufadora geyser is an amazing attraction on the Pacific Ocean, and finding a beach hotel or property is incredibly easy. Bajamar is amazing development just north of Ensenada, with huge beautiful golf courses and an amazing ocean view.
Sportfishing on the Pacific side of the municipality is also an incredible draw to tourists and locals alike.
